๐คWHY does this website exist?
I think that's the questionโ๏ธ you need answered before you waste another second of your life reading my inane drivel.
What do YOU stand to gain from it?
My name is Alan and on 9th June 2023 my wife and I became "Faraway Grandparents".
By which I mean our first grandchild was born a 4 hour journey from where we live.
Our daughter and her husband live in the same town as the rest of his family...
And, whilst we all get on really well, I can't deny a twinge of jealousy towards the in-person cuddle time the retired grandparents living just down the road get.
Since my wife and I both work full time and live far away, I started investigating ways we could build an emotionally close relationship with Sophia (our granddaughter) without being physically present all the time.
And I found a lot ๐ฅณ Yay!
Unfortunately I also found a lot of "screen time is BAD"๐ sentiment from understandably protective mothers.
Our daughter isn't quite so extreme but she and hubby ARE both scientists who research everything from appropriate fruits to developmental milestones before doing anything related to Sophia.
Many (though not ALL) of my plans involved using video communication in some way and I certainly didn't want to be doing anything that might cause problems for Sophia.
I wanted my involvement to be beneficial for ALL of us.
Also, I just couldn't accept "meaningful interaction with family members who love her and she would otherwise simply not see" would be a negative for ANY child simply because there was a screen involved.
Rather than give up, down the rabbit hole of academic studies I went...
Searching for strong evidence that my plans would actually help Sophia thrive...
And certainly not hinder her development in any way.
Turns out way cleverer people than me have performed experiments PROVING...
ACTIVE screen time is different from PASSIVE screen time
So, whilst television viewing was associated with:
children playing interactive video games actually showed improvement in:
Children using educational video games were also described by teachers as "remarkably well-behaved" and showed improved classroom dynamics.
Multiple studies show measurable improvements in core academic skills in students engaging in ACTIVE rather than PASSIVE screen time.
Similar themes showed up so often in different research papers that I was convinced - and so was our daughter
So I built Sophia an experimental "hide and seek" video game.
Each screen had objects for her to drag around (helping with motor skills) until she found a random family member's photo hiding behind one of them...
When she dragged their face onto a smiley emoji (fixed in place) she gets rewarded with a special video message from that person.
It was a huge success with everybody who saw it loving it๐
Today I help other Faraway Grandparents become an active, meaningful presence in their grandchild's daily life.
Not just during scheduled video calls, but in the quiet moments when they're learning, playing, and growing.
Whether you're tech-savvy or prefer someone else to handle the technical details...
Whether you live 100 miles away or 1,000 miles away...
Whether your grandchild is 2 or 10...
There are proven ways to show up meaningfully in their world.
